About Snehatheeram
Snehatheeram was seed down in the heart of Rev Sr. Roselin, by God with a definite plan, in the month of September 2002; she opened this home of mercy on 26th September with three mentally challenged women picked up from the streets. The divine seed in Sr. Roselin found a fertile ground in a heart inclined to love unreservedly. Inspired by her divine spouse, she decided to give herself fully than to receive, to love than to be loved, to serve than to be served. A resolute and confident personality emerged from within her with total trust in the divine providence. God in his mysterious way led her to the hitherto little known Vilakudy village in Pathanapuram taluk of Kollam district in God’s own country, Kerala.
Snehatheeram, a psycho social rehabilitation centre for mentally challenged destitute women started its functioning. It is a common sight on the lane and by lanes of our cities to see mentally challenged people who have lost their memory of their home, place of birth, relatives & wander about aimlessly. Snehatheeram is a family where the members who are ignored by their own family, friends, and relatives live together. Are these people who live who quench their hunger from the dirty stinking dustbins, sleeping on roadsides without bath or washing an object of contempt not our sisters? We have opened this institution with the intention of looking after such mentally deranged orphans giving them food, shelter, clothing, medicines, in loving care.
At present we have three houses with above 300 inmates and 8 children altogether. Besides the main house at Vilakudy of Kollam district. We have subsidiary houses, one at Koothrapally, Changanashery of Kottayam district and the other at Mithirmala, Kallara of Thiruvanathapuram district. We have inmates from almost all states of India. All of them were at one time or another brought by the Police from Railway stations, Bus stations and Hospitals. Snehatheeram accepts the destitute irrespective of their cast, religion, language or state. The mentally deranged inmates are admitted here under the direction of Police, Social workers, and representatives from various Legislative bodies and Local authorities. We also accept mentally ill destitute women from Thiruvanathapuram (Oolempara), Kozhikode (Kuthiravattom), and Thrissur Government mental health centers. Most of them reached there by the Police through Court. Since they are ignored by their family, friends and relatives. Snehatheeram provide them proper care and protection.
An organization registered under the Travancore Cochin Literacy, Scientific & Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955 (Act XII of 1955). We are having Certificate of Recognition from Board of Control for Orphanages and Other Charitable Homes Kerala, Psycho-Social Rehabilitation centre under Social Justice Department of Kerala and also have License for Mental Health Centre by Kerala Mental Health Authority. As we all know being an illness it requires treatment but the stigma & discrimination from family associated with it most often results in ignoring the treatment which leads to irreversible condition. The institution runs with the contributions received in the form of Donation, Food, Clothes and Medicines from public.
